TGK Release Destinations

Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center is part of the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department, commonly shortened to MDCR. A departure from TGK can end with release to the community, court-ordered pretrial supervision, probation, electronic monitoring, transfer to another county, delivery to the Florida Department of Corrections, or transfer to federal or immigration custody. Those events are not interchangeable. The release transaction should state which custody episode ended and what happened next.

TGK has a special role in the county system. A TGK release record is strongest when it includes the booking or jail number, effective date and time, release type or authority, and any transfer destination.

Confirm a TGK Release

Miami-Dade documents a released-within-the-last-72-hours option in its official inmate search. That is the first public check for a recent TGK release. It is a short web window, not the legal retention period for the underlying record. If a match appears, save the identifying numbers and displayed release details. Then use the Release Unit or court docket to determine whether the event was bond, a court order, sentence completion, monitored release, or transfer.

A clear lookup sequence keeps the systems in their proper roles:

2. Match the full name and booking details. Do not rely on a name alone when aliases or similar names appear.
3. Call MDCR Inmate Information at 786-263-7000 or the Release Unit at 786-263-5360 when the result is new, missing, or unclear.

5. Review the Miami-Dade criminal court docket for the bond, order, disposition, or sentence behind the change.

TGK Release Times and Exit

MDCR states that county releases take place from 6 a.m. through 9 p.m. at TGK, regardless of whether the person has transportation waiting. The public pickup point is in front of the facility by the signs marked “Inmate Release Area.” This local process makes TGK different from the other county detention sites. It also explains why a family member may be directed to TGK even when the last roster entry named Metro West or Pre-Trial.

Bond payment or a court order does not set an exact exit time. MDCR warns that release processing may take several hours after the legal and financial steps are complete. Staff still must verify the authority, close the custody transaction, address holds, and route property. The published window is useful for pickup planning, but it cannot predict one person’s release time.

TGK Release Record Requests

MDCR Central Records handles requests for county booking and release material. Ask for existing fields rather than asking staff to decide what happened. A focused request identifies the person by full name, date of birth, jail number when known, and booking date. It then seeks the booking record and custody-history entry showing release date and time, disposition or release type, authorizing court or agency, transfer destination or hold if nonexempt, and the booking photograph only when needed.

The MDCR records-request page accepts online requests and lets a requester track status. Published charges include 15 cents for a one-sided standard copy, 20 cents for a double-sided copy, and $1 per certified or color page. Delivery may be added. Work beyond 20 minutes can bring a labor charge, and the office may seek an advance partial payment. The county does not publish one fixed response time, so request an estimate.

TGK Release System Totals

MDCR publishes a daily jail population report with aggregate bookings, people in custody, releases, facility census, and 180-day trend measures. It also reports immigration hold and detainer trends. These figures describe the county system as a whole. They do not identify a released person or replace the named custody transaction.

A daily released total may help explain workflow volume at TGK, but it cannot show why one person left or where that person went. Use the count only as context. Person-level confirmation still requires the recent-release entry, Release Unit response, court record, or requested booking and release file.

TGK Property After Release

Booking property has a separate timeline from the release record. MDCR says property remains in the TGK Property Room for up to 30 days. After that point it moves offsite, and pickup must be arranged at 786-263-5355. Property returned from offsite but not collected within 72 hours goes back to storage. Unclaimed property is scheduled for destruction 30 days after release under County Implementing Order 7-20.

These deadlines do not govern how long MDCR keeps custody records. They only address physical property. A person or authorized helper should confirm the pickup process before traveling, particularly after the first 30-day period. The jail number and booking details can help staff connect the item to the right custody episode.

TGK Releases to ICE

Miami-Dade’s daily jail report tracks immigration holds and detainers. A detainer is a request from another authority concerning custody when the local case ends. If the TGK release transaction identifies ICE, the person did not necessarily enter the community. County custody ended, but immigration custody may have begun.

Search the ICE Online Detainee Locator System by nine-digit A-number and country of birth, or by exact name and country of birth. ICE says the locator covers people released from its custody during the prior 60 days as well as current detainees. The result must still be read with ICE paperwork or immigration-court status because departure can mean conditional release, transfer, or removal.

The county and ICE windows are different. MDCR documents a 72-hour recent-release view, while ICE describes 60 days of released-from-ICE coverage. Neither window controls how long the source agency retains its records. If both public results have expired, request MDCR’s transfer entry and use ICE or immigration-court records for the next custody episode.

Miami-Dade’s aggregate report can show that immigration holds exist in the jail system, but its totals cannot confirm one person. The named release transaction connects a TGK episode to ICE. An A-number, when available, is a better bridge to the immigration locator than a name alone.

Note: An ICE transfer is both an MDCR release transaction and continued custody, so the county and immigration records answer different questions.
